Winkles Seafood Restaurant
Winkles, an update of the traditional East End seafood restaurant, located on a corner site on the Roman Road, is the first seafood restaurant to open in the area. The Fruit de Mer platter has people travelling from all over town and is an especially big draw at lunch with nearby customers from the city.
Offering a selection of the highest quality shellfish and other sumptuous daily fish dishes, it is sure to please even the most discerning of palates. With a seafood theme evident throughout, it is relaxed and informal with its bright and breezy interior, cafe chairs, chalked specials and marine blue tabletops.
Chef, Franck Oliko, who has an impressive background, having previously worked at The Ivy, Bibendum Oyster Bar, Quaglino's and most recently Smiths of Smithfield, has devised an innovative menu.
Apart from the regular favourites, such as Belgian style mussels with mushrooms and cream, there is a selection of weekly specials including pan fried gurnard with balsamic roasted shallots and vine cherry tomatoes, risotto nero with calamari, John Dory with chargrilled baby leeks, soft boiled egg and mustard vinaigrette and a Mixed grill of monkfish, organic salmon and squid with chilli gem dressing. The accompanying lobster mash is also divine.
