Tower Hamlets is the heart
of the East End. It is located next to the old City of London, and
has a history steeped in tradition but also with its eye focused firmly
on the future. The area is home to such places as Canary Wharf, London's
only lighthouse and one of the world's most famous tourist attractions
- the Tower of London (above).
Tower Hamlets contains a host of activities for the visitor to get
involved in. The distinctive architecture of London Docklands with
its spectacular new office and housing developments, the 800ft Canary
Wharf Tower and converted wharves and warehouses are all must sees
for visitors using the futuristic (and driver-less) Docklands Light
Railway (DLR).
There are also many historical pubs with stunning views of the River
Thames. The Tower Bridge Experience brings to life more than 100 years
of the Bridge's fascinating history, while a variety of street markets
ranging from the renowned Petticoat Lane to the 400 year old Sunday
Flower Market combine to form a rich cultural quarter that few areas
of London can match. Tower Hamlets is very accessible by public transport.
