Oona King MP, aged 29, Was brought up in
London and attended Haverstock Comprehensive School in Chalk Farm.
Her mother is from a working class Jewish family in Newcastle and
her father is African-American from Georgia. He has lived as a political
exile for 35 years because of participation in the American Civil
Rights movement.
Oona graduated from York University with a First in politics in
June 1990.
From December 1990 until April 1991 she worked on the European Parliament's
"Economic & Monitory Affairs Committee" as a research assistant
for Socialist Group in the Parliament.
In April l991 she became political assistant to the Labour Party
Leader in European Parliament, Glyn Ford MEP holding the post until
December 1993. From May 1992 until July 1992 she was seconded as
a research/campaign assistant to the late John Smith MP.
In December 1993 she became Glenys Kinnock's political assistant
and held that post until September 1995.
In September 1995 she left Brussels to become a full time worker
for the GMB, Britain's general trade union She was employed as a
recruitment and organisation officer in the GMB Southern Region,
which covers south London, the southern home counties and the south
west. She then became a Regional Organiser and convening officer
for the NHS representing 2,500 public sector workers, the job she
held when she was selected at Bethnal Green & Bow. she also had
responsibility for the Region's Equal Rights and Race Committees.
Oona speaks French and Italian, and she has a working knowledge
of Spanish. She married her Italian husband, Tiberio Santomarco
in July 1994.
