"To all of you that embrace the charm of Melange- please feel free to join myself and various other performers on the 15th December at Melange.

After months of searching for a venue, S-Pun* has found a home, Melange's intimate venue will provide the ambience for an evening of scandalous performance, featuring Team Disgusting and some seriously -and quite surrel- performances..Look out for the Happy-Sad clown offering advice to those lost or looking to be found."

Historicaly environments like Melange are eventually destroyed by banal and non progressive despots ... i grasp hold to every experience i encounter at this lovely shelter of light, its fragility and purity is like unto an endangered species within the wilderness of our urban exsistences. very wordy, maybe too romantic ...so what "

"Melange does not only attract Vice Magazine (and whats wrong with Vice and Dazed) I have been to nights hosted by world music promoters, the professor of drama at City Lit does a monthly Improv night there, Vogue and Creative Weekly have done nights there.

This bar really tries TO PUSH THE ENVELOPE - I even went to a wine and chocolate tasting night at Melange.

Obviously whoever doesn't know doesn't know... "

"Whoever wrote the review on the 4th is either totally inept, blind or spiritually bankrupt...

Melange is the most friendly place we have ever been you just need to know which night you are coming for if you come to a nu rave night and you are not a new raver you may not enjoy it, some people like coming through back doors and having random nights.

This myth about the Shoreditch twat is really boring and played out, I mean really Uncle Sams is cool too but Melange is quite special after all they seem to have the most reviews of any bar on this page...

Anyway it's not about Dante or Isabelle it's about the people that come to Melange ..

Peace and love people rock on Dante"

"Personally I think Melange is a little too pretencious. I mean - we all know what kind of night life hoxton and shoreditch offer, Dazed and confused mixed with vodka, tight-jeans or neon rave.

However you may look upon this lifestyle it exists whether you like it or not. The thing about Melange is that it tries to be the after party for all the above.

I actually went to melange after recomendation, maybe at the time i should have thought a little more about the person whom made that
recommendation.

Sleazy custom and fake.

Questions i would like to know is,

why did we have to be escorted into the bar around the back gate - through the kitchen to find ourself ushered around the bar?

my advice is carry on a little up the road, you will find everything you want from melange at a bar called uncle sams, never closes carries on serving alcohol - yet is a very nice bar that attracts real people and does not glorify

Shite like Vice magazine. "

"Melange is just a really rad place, the family that are the management are always keen to put on a party. Dante's always got a smile on his face, a story to tell and a compliment on hand.
Everyone else there is approachable, we leave our egos at the door as we enter and open ourselves up to co-existing in a small but comfortabale venue.

Pricey booze, but melange has not got the financial backing and i'm always happy to make my small donation and sip on a beer that's making a contribution to a place that provides a lot of good times.

If you don't like it, don't piss on it! Let it be and move on..."

"I think Melange is excellent and people should give it a break. Its a lot less exclusive than most places in Hoxton/Shoreditch and is trying to do something a bit different. Much better than the big chill house/bar, hyped up herbal or even Cargo for example

I liked the atmosphere upstairs and a few problems with the sound downstairs should not put people off. I danced the night away both nights-mostly down to the people but also the atmosphere created in the place

Since everyone seems so anxious to establish their credibility I have lived in hackney since 1995 though I am originally from a suburb. I agree the area can seem scary late at night but its exagerrated and there are quite a few places open nearby. I'd rather walk down that road at 5am than the suburbs at closing time. Its not that far from shoreditch (15 min)and lots of buses

I think on Easter sunday there were some problems on the door but generally the staff are great and its doing good things on the music front and we should give it a break

I have had noisy neighbours in the past so do sympathise with the guy upstairs but he is living on a main road in hackney near to shops, garages etc. He must have known this and if he has had a reasonable offer, I think he should accept it and move somewhere a bit quieter if that's what he wants

Lets stop carping and celebrate something positive-ok they might make a few mistakes but at least they are trying."

But if the regulars are all as snooty/self-important as some of the people at the bottom of this page, then it's time for Melange to get more exclusive. Big up the Easter Sunday party in particular (i left at 6am having had a great night), big up more of the same, big up some form of moderator outing all the baddies on this page. "

"Al thank you so much for your advice and comments. Seriously man. We usually are very carefull with the events we create, the acts we book, cultural things we do etc... Ididnot particulary agree with the way that night in question was run but you must appreciate the fact that everyone has a different way of working which will obviously effect clietle in a host different ways. To really understand Melange come on a Tuesday Wednesday or Thursday night when our real regulars come. They will explain on a deeper and more personal level how they feel about it. Melange is like your front room everyone talks to each other ,there seems to be some inate and natural comraderie between Melangeurs..give me a call i am determined to show you what i mean. 07896350086

Also whoever said that no one is fooled by the squat like interior may be getting the wrong idea. We just dont have the money to finish building work, if you want to donate some cash brother, would deffo use it to finish some building
work.

In order to form a real educated opinion about something that was created based on a philosphical premise- one must sample each side of the components that establish the idea. Most of the people that love Melange come almost everydayt . We certainly do not just let people in off of the street or we would be the Russian Bar. We do not advertise so people that know come to Melange. We are not trying to be cool, edgy, trendy, community conscious or anything .. we just want to create a place that allows people to do what they want , we want people to be themselves whatever that may be.

On Saturdays we do a fruit and vegetable market, vinyl and clothes trading as well . This Market is run by Biggs and Dread who are pre- gentrified Shoreditch people, Also our caretaker Bradleys family has been living in the area for 30 years and is one of these young guys who wears hoods and force most of you to clutch your purse tighter . My girlfriends family has been living in Hoxton for 100 years....I am American..so what-- Non of this is really relevant everyone seems to be making claims on this area, I would hope that my thoughts will never be restricted to only thinking of the period of time I have lived in a small part of London. But obviously if so many people have taken time out to write I guess wearemaking somekind of impression. We have an amazing sound system all Nexo Ps10s but we cannot use it properly because of new noise laws.

The guy upstairs keeps complaining about the sound, sometimes when we arent even at work andhereports us he just wants to shut us down personal vendeta stuff. Matthew please move !!! We offered this guy 5 grand just to move out, he said no HES ONLY 24 AS WELL...

Guys we just do what we do we seriously dont have some big grand scheme...but allofthese comments prove that what I planned three years ago is working . Thank you for telling me what I needto improve, if anyone wants to helpout as well
give me a call your all welcome. 07896350086 This is the only way you will get to know the real Melange program.

Melange is about people. thanks for all the comments guys... see yall around..sorry bout my diction really tired at the mo...oh yeah whoever stole our diary please bring it back PLEASE

Too many moaners on here, go somewhere else when you dont like a place... it's a 8 minute walk from Shoreditch Central, hardly far. Some of you probably write into Anne Robinson and moan about bad language on TV before 9.

"'Ello, believe me have been into music from the first note I heard, and I definitely hear you caring about it with a passion, and played/organised some events, myself. I've been around the block. But I reckon if you have an open policy, like Melange claims, you also have to be open to the fact people will just arrive on the off-chance. Most people out that late are people who won't be able to sleep for whatever reason. Well, we all know, why, and you'll have people wandering Kingsland Rd looking for various stuff. Not saying it's ideal, but that's the reality. I don't plan because normally know the places which are likely to play good things. I went here with a bunch of people who seemed to know their stuff, but felt it fell well short of promises. Once there, it is a bit remote. Am well behind what seems to be Melange's ethos, but to me it didn't deliver, which is a shame, because it's a good idea in principle. "

"Hello Clive. If you're into music and you go out for the music then yeah you do plan ahead. I dont work for Melange so can't speak for them but in my opinion a night is gonna be better if everyone who is there is there cos they care about the music not just people that wander in off the street just cos they dont want to go to bed. In my opinion Melange's 'agenda' doesnt send mixed messages, it simply allows people to put on parties with music that they love. "

"Melange isn't "alternative" or "community based". Lovely as the place is, it's just another bar/cafe/restuarant in Hackney that caters in the main for the middle classes that have invaded the area of late. I dont have a problem with that per se - it's a positive in lots of ways. But would never say it's really "community based"... Hackney has a very big community and very few would bother with Melange. I really must get back to work. "

"Tammy, I think I met you. I'm a pretty open-minded guy, and well up for taking a few risks on a night out, but it's just not realistic to find out what's going on before going to a place like Melange. I just don't know anyone who organises such forward thinking when going out. You're more likely to go here on a whim, or on a spur of the moment. Because of location, it's the kinda place that people end up spontaneously. To put an agenda on a place that is meant to have no agenda just sends out mixed messages on what a place stands for. "

"Erik fella, maybe people are trying to keep the Shoreditch twat out of the area, and from my experience, I met a few of them here, and it made me sad. Others might have felt the same, which maybe also why people feel so passionate about leaving strong-willed comments. You can't confuse comment with self-importance. People are entitled to opinions, and let's face it, if people aren't able to give opinions, then the likes of the Shoreditch Twat goes un-fettered. I fully agree that creativity should shine, but complancey stiffles that. I'm all up for being alternative and community-based, and on my experience, I didn't feel that was happening here. I sure hope it does, and anywhere else in London. "

I was there late on easter saturday and sunday/monday morning. Got in for the reasonable price of a fiver, danced to some sweet music in a sweaty basement, went home a happy man. Unique venue, dig it very much. Do need to sort sound out though.

"I'm the guestlist bitch with the grotesque make up from easter sunday, I heard I've been getting E-disses on some website so I thought Id check it out. I totally agree that a bad welcome into a place can really ruin the night and so I'd like to just apologise to any of you I offended. Granted we were pretty sloppy and I was panicking but I dont think that you should see this as a reflection on Melange as a place. Its a wicked venue, I loved the grimey downstairs! Staff and management are cool. As with anywhere you go out in London, the music plays a big part in the atmosphere of a place. Melange's open canvas music policy is refreshing, its all about the music which is organised by independent promoters. This can give rise to some really new and exciting nights. However the risk is its not gonna be for everyone all the time. If you're particular about what you like you should check up whats on beforehand. "

"Melange has only been open for 6 months and every time I have been there it has been different. It is not a nightclub but a place where people are free to do what they feel , they hire locals from the neighborhood and hold a number of interesting activities, unfortunately promoters sometimes destroy the image by holding unorganised nights. of nights must choose their own door staff ... i dont feel they are trying to do anything but be open. Melange is like a religion for me if you guys don't feel it then it is not for you, they do have a long way to go before they are completely finished with decor but atmosphere in this place is amazing. Bank holiday Sunday did not represent the real Melange... They are not trying too hard, they are what they are if you dont understand that the mission of Melange is unique and special go somewhere else. I love it and will keep going - keep it up! Dante and Isabelle. Either you know or you don't its real bad that all the bad reviews are from people that dont understand the true artistic ethos of The Melange Social Club, suburbanites with their socially banal attitudes will never understand Melange. "Shocking. Went there over Easter and the people that run this place was just full of it, especially the woman with the 'guest list;, who was determined to wield her power trip, with as little grace as possible. Sorry, but I've promoted bars like Lab and The Social in my time, and this is not the way to build a reputation. At one point people were prevented from going down to the DJ bar below, only to find it was empty. If you want to appeal to a grown-up and discerning crowd, you need to learn how to behave the same way themselves. I will be telling everyone not to go here. If you can't run a decent night, that don't try. Sorry, harsh, but Londoners do not need to put up with this. "

"Uneccessarily aggro bouncers, and a door bitch with grotesque self-importance, and even more grotesque make-up. Absoultely zero atmosphere and a confrontational door policy guaranteed to bring a downer to a great night. At one point, on Easter Sunday, one organiser told the crowd who'd paid a hefty door fee, they couldn't go into the only dance room, even though it was completely empty in there. Shocking. Unsurprisingly, as the music and DJing was appalling. Suffice to say it ruined what is usually one of the best nights on the social calendar. The people who run this place should hang their heads in total shame. "

"Ace little place! I DJed there last night and the basement rocks!!

Drinks prices seemed to slide each time I went to the bar and my mate had his phone stolen from there but still had a great time and will return as a punter."

"To all you guys who complained about the tatty appearance of the basement, are you insane?? That’s my favourite bit. It all adds to the atmosphere. Low key and chilled. but people can go a have a great time."

"Melange is clearly one of the most interezsting and honest environments in Shoreditch. Everyone is donig the same thing, Melange gives people freedom to feel comfortable... I am a
member at Melange and have seen certain celebrities just turn up randomly, very trendy but not at all pretentious. Give them a call the atmosphere is lush and they are honest abou the fact that they are still building ; Londonpaper wrote a great review and I believe they are worth every word of praise.

Melange is like my second front room and I love the way they mix caberet with rock, fashion, homeade chocolate, wine tastings, and even the odd 24 hour rave. Mleange is beautiful sophisticated and like Metro said the only real bohemian venue in London we love it ..."

"Hi there, was at melange for ELA on saturday night. As soon as we walked in it had a real chilled feel about the place, nice people and appeared to have a real approachable ambience.

However, as i spent more time and walked around to see what it was all about, i noticed that it appeared to be unfinished, is seems that the management are gonna be refurbishing as the basement was all gutted out and required at the very least a floor and walls.

This was very dissapointing. Still Rome was not built in a day, moreover the romans did not open rome unfinished.
ciao..."

"I have the fortune of working not very far from this bar, so have watched its progress from afar. As soon as it opened I was straight in. On learning the plans for this bar, then I think everyone in the area will be very amazed once completed and what they are trying to do for the area is commendable, after all Rome wasn't built in a day.

I think for the area the drinks are very well priced and as soon as the kitchen is up and running I’ll be partaking in lunch as well. I can not wait until everything is done so those reviewers below can eat their words!"

" i went to the melange club on saturday night for the opening of the new night called ella, and i must say, i was very dissapointed. the music was good but the place was very run down. the place needs a total refurbishment before they can allow anyone to go there."

its an awesome venue! drinks could be slightly cheaper but then i am a young guy who tends to be tight..."
